How Do Carbs Affect Your Diet?
If you’ve been on a diet, I’m sure you’ve come across the confusion around CARBS. What carbs can I eat? When should I eat carbs? Will carbs make me fat? The list of questions goes on and on. In this video, I share with you my personal opinion, which has come from helping over 10,000 men lose weight and become healthier and stronger for themselves and their families. Dive on in and follow me to answer your questions once and for all.
What Are Carbs? (1:03)
Carbs are one of the three macronutrients that make up your daily calorie intake, alongside proteins and fats. Carbohydrate has 4 calories per gram, protein has 4 also, and fat has 9 calories per gram. Carbs are predominantly used as a source of energy, to keep us alert and energetic throughout the day. However, they do not keep you feeling full for as long as proteins and fats do. This is what can often lead to overeating if you have a high carb diet.
What Do Carbs Do To Your Body? (3:08)
When you eat carbs, they are broken down, processed, and shipped into your muscle cells, organs, and fat cells for storage or to be burned for energy. Too much of the wrong types of carbs, such as processed and sugary foods, baked goods, and sodas can end up being stored as fat, leading to an increase in weight. This is because they are high in calories and spike insulin levels. When insulin levels are high, fat-burning stops and storage takes over.
What Carbs Should You Eat? (4:59)
As I’ve just mentioned, the carbs to avoid are things like processed foods, sugary snacks, baked goods, and sodas. You should also try to avoid most ‘white’ carbs, like white bread, white pasta, etc. You should aim to eat the unprocessed versions of these, like Ezekiel bread, sprouted rice, and wholemeal pasta, along with organic berries, sweet potatoes, and quinoa. You should make sure to pair these with healthy fats and good sources of protein.
When Should You Eat Carbs? (7:54)
As long as it’s part of a balanced meal and they’re the right types of carbs as mentioned previously, you should include them in every meal…
…with one exception… BREAKFAST!
As your levels of fat burning hormones are high earlier in the day, you should aim to keep insulin levels low, so as not to put your body into a state of storage by spiking insulin. That is why I highly recommend including very low amounts of carbs in your breakfast. A small amount of quinoa, a healthy breakfast shake, or something similar is fine, but avoid the bagels, croissants and endless rounds of toast with your morning meal.
