(0:58) Essentially, your heart works as a pump to move blood around your body. What heart failure refers to, is the failure of your heart to distribute enough oxygenated blood to your tissues and organs to allow your body to function properly. This umbrella term actually contains a couple of different, more specific conditions: Coronary Artery Disease (1:29) Coronary artery disease occurs when the main arteries that pump blood away from your heart, out to your tissues and organs, become clogged up with plaque. This plaque is caused by eating high sugar foods, fried foods and a generally poor diet that leads to inflammation inside your arteries. The plaque is actually laid down as a protector from that inflammation, but as continuous plaques are laid down, the arteries become smaller. Heart Attack (2:20) A heart attack is similar to coronary artery disease causes, but instead of the heart pumping blood OUT, it is the disruption to the blood supply coming IN that is the problem. The narrowing of the arteries leads to your heart not receiving enough oxygenated blood itself and therefore being unable to function properly. This lack of oxygenated blood can sometimes lead to necrosis (tissue death) of some of the heart muscle. What Causes Chronic Heart Failure? (2:45) There are a few main causes of chronic heart failure, which I’ll highlight below: 1. Smoking Smoking will increase the chances of plaque build-up in your arteries, so is definitely top of the list for causes of chronic heart failure in men over 40, and the general populace. 2. Unchecked High Blood Pressure High blood pressure essentially means that the pressure within your arteries when your heart is pumping (Systolic) and at rest (Diastolic) is higher than normal. A normal reading would be 130 Systolic over 80 Diastolic. High blood pressure is usually defined as a reading of 140/90 or higher. This high pressure damages your artery wall, which is healed by plaques. As you know from above, plaque causes further narrowing of the artery, which can lead to restriction of blood in or out of your heart. 3. High Unchecked Cholesterol and Triglycerides High unchecked cholesterol and triglycerides can also lead to blockages in your arteries from plaque deposits, in much the same way as smoking and high blood pressure. Each of these causes is very much linked to damage, which is healed by plaque. Plaque narrows the artery, and narrow arteries lead to blood restriction. Controlling Cholesterol: The Myths and Facts: → https://www.fitfatherproject.com/controlling-cholesterol/ What Can Prevent Chronic Heart Failure? (3:40) 1. Healthy Diet (3:47) A healthy diet will help to reduce the likelihood of damage to your arteries, which will, in turn, lead to lower plaque deposits necessary to heal the damage. This will reduce the narrowing and allow your heart to work as normal. 2. Sleep More (3:50) Sleep helps to balance hormone levels and reduce stress. Getting poor sleep quality or quantity will lead to an increase in cortisol levels, which puts you into a state of stress throughout the day. When you are stressed, your heart pumps faster and harder, meaning more work and more overload on your heart. 3. Exercise Regularly (4:43) Exercising helps to improve your heart strength and function. It also helps to open up the arteries and increase blood flow to your muscles and other tissues. This makes them much more efficient at doing the function they should be doing. 4. Quit Smoking (4:55) As I’ve mentioned above, smoking is one of the leading causes of heart failure, so if you currently smoke and want to improve your health, try quitting.
